This session in ARLALAN’s vodcast, a brief documentation of my design studio project ‘whitelight’ at RMIT Industrial Design. My design is called ‘musha’, a massive pendant lamp made out of industrial wool felt that uses high power LEDs as its main light source for downlight at the center of the lamp, provides enough light for dinning table center piece or high ceiling staircase. Small T-type LEDs or fiber optic lights around the underneath of the lamp also create glowing and shimmering effects to set the mood in the environment to be more warm and calm with a little touch of fantasy.

The vdo shows step by step on how i arrived with the final design, from inspirations to productions. There are some experiments with different felt materials and how to form them into desire shapes, as well as, testing on how do they look like with different light sources around the house including mountable LEDs unit, floor lamp and even from the streets in Melbourne. In order to finalized my design, I’ve been working on different mock ups and sketches.

now, the project is in the production process and hopefully, it is going to be in RMIT Industrial Design Exhibition Day at RMIT building 87. I hope it will turn out great and I’m really looking forward to see the finished product myself. But for now, I will show you the design processes for ‘musha_luminaire’…cheers

The sound quality is generally well recorded and the topics discussed in this podcast are easily recognized by every industrial designers. It gives a really good sense of profession in designs and how this area of industries work today. the describsions of the products in this podcast are terrific, i can pictures how they look like without seeing the pictures…

Welcome to another session of ARLALAN’s podcast…

In interactive products, sound feedbacks usually use to commicate with their users. It is important to have a good feedback that response to the user effectively.. My major design project for next year is a design that involes light, interaction and mood, but if there’s some additional element that i could use to improve my design to more efficient, having some sound feedback might spice things up a little. Because everybody knows how music make an impact on our everyday life, and that just some sounds of all sounds. Sounds can make enormous impact on human’s emotion and today we are going to experiment with some of the sound clips i found on the net, put together to create mood.. I think the main aim would be for relaxing and peaceful, because living life is not easy so we might need a little rest with some chill-out sounds..

i wish i have one of these.. because it’s boring sitting on a train, trying to find some place to stare at til get off.. and here is a fun time with swing.. this vdo has good narrating (by not saying much but it’s good that it’s more like playing around) and surprised appearance of unexpected girl who joined in just make this vdo fun to watch and also show all the features of the product while doing it..cool.. which answers are likely to be interesting to a wider design audience?

From my own posts, I think the answers that I got from Mick in PODCAST1 , which made me realize that not everyone consider lights as an important part of an interior. According to a few books i’ve read recently, most people consider lightings as tools that allow them to see.. more like task lights. As for me i’m really fasinated by lights, both natural and artficial. “Light gives people visions”, and because of that fact, there are endless posibilities that this ‘light’ can creates. Light can be adapt to suit different needs, especially in design fields. It is an important element that could compliment the design, to be more appealing and all.. so I know that it would be quite a challenge to design a ‘light’ that attracts people, make them feel like they need to experience the sensation of mood lighting.. besides industrial design, i think everyone would have some idea on how to manipulate light in their own design pieces..

Contextualisation of my podcast and video?

If i’m producing a DVD for my podcast and video, i would have a DVD case, concertina like, with a small booklet about the DVD. Inside the DVD, it would automatically start with an introduction to my DVD, then it will lead to the main menus screen which allows users to choose the piece they wanna watch by click on thumbnail of the project or a small preview that automatically play when selected and screen shots for video pieces. The user also can hit ‘play all’ to view all of the medias in the DVD in orders.

Along side with each pieces, i would have a brief introduction about the project selected and maybe some moving graphic floating around in the menus screen. The credits for the DVD would be a seperate piece with all the projects’ credits showing in alphabetical order.

Some of these features can be apply in my blog here as well such as, brief descriptions of the piece that explain the details of the project, previews or thumbnails that allow people to get some idea about the piece. These features should improve my blog and make things more interesting on the page. People who visiting my blog would not have to click into the actual post to be able to know what’s inside, which helps them focus on the blog consistantly…

I’ve start my first blog not a long time ago as a part of my ‘Broadcasting’ projects. i found it’s a great idea creating my own blog, it’s easy, i probably have to spent some times try to figure out how to create a website. In order to create a website, i must know some knowledge on coding and HTML. When i create my own blog, i felt like it’s easier than organizing my computer’s desktop. Blogging is easier to manage which allows bloggers to focus more on the contents they put in. Website usually broken down into different catagories and pages that controls by webmaster but blogs generally depend on the date that bloggers written down. In my opinion, i think blogs are more personal than website and i’ve read some comments about the differences between a website and a blog a while ago that, “a company has website to talks to customers, a person has a blog to talks to people.” I’m pretty much agree with that. Blogs also have advantage of RSS feed that can be set up to automatically notify readers that the feed they subscribed has been updated. Compare to website, blogs are much easier to find through different search engines and with effective ways to communicate with blogger, which are leaving comments, trackbacks, and Permalink. From my own experience, it’s a lot more difficult and take longer time trying to get in contact with webmasters.
